Postpartum Fitness Made Simple: Gentle Routines You Can Do at Home
One of the most common concerns I hear from new parents is how to safely return to movement after giving birth. Once the baby arrives, everything changes—your body feels unfamiliar, your schedule is unpredictable, and your energy is reserved for recovery. This is why postpartum fitness must be gentle, intuitive, and realistic—especially in those early weeks. Postpartum fitness isn't about ""bouncing back"". It's about rebuilding your foundation physically, emotionally, and mentally. These soft at-home routines are accessible, safe, and designed for parents navigating the messy, magical early days.
Focus on Foundational Healing
Rest is not laziness; rest is recovery. The first six weeks are a crucial period of healing. This is where our doula support and overnight newborn care services become essential, helping parents prioritize recovery. Postpartum fitness is about reconnecting—with your breath, core, and posture.
Breathing as the First Workout:
Breathwork reconnects your diaphragm, pelvic floor, and deep core muscles. You can begin diaphragmatic breathing the day after delivery unless otherwise instructed. Lie down or sit upright, inhale through your nose, feel your ribs expand, and as you exhale, imagine knitting your deep abdominal muscles together. Even a few minutes a day can improve stabilization and emotional regulation.
Rebuilding the Core with Intention:
Avoid crunches early on. Instead, focus on slow movements like pelvic tilts, heel slides, and gentle marches. Progress doesn't require an hour-long workout, just consistency.
Pelvic Floor Support:
Whether you had a vaginal delivery or C-section, your pelvic floor needs attention. Inhaling relaxes the pelvic floor; exhaling engages it. This subtle connection builds foundational strength.
Walking:
One of the safest and most beneficial postpartum workouts. It strengthens the heart, improves energy, and enhances sleep. Even ten minutes a day makes a meaningful difference.
Movement for Mental Well-being
Postpartum fitness is intertwined with mental well-being. Movement helps lower cortisol and reduce feelings of isolation. If you're ready for support that honors your healing journey, I invite you to connect with us at Laguna Baby Collective. Your recovery matters.
